I have tried it! Actually ... I have tried almost every king of unusual and "strange" golf shots. My mentor and hero as a kid was a trick shot artist named Peter Longo.
As far as getting a lot more distance? For me, not really. I have spent a lot of time working on a huge turn and hitting the long ball from a regular stance, and thus having a much longer and bigger swing than almost anyone I know.
My other passion is the Long Drive. OK ... re-phrase, hitting the super large drive IS my passion!
Crazy I know, but to me watching a golf ball rocket from the tee is better than the best Hollywood movie. An adrenalin rush :-)
