Sun Dogs are what look like rings around the sun, and typically form just after sunrise on windy, bitterly cold morningsSun Dog from Sub-zero Monday in Minnesota after snow falls. If you have never seen them, consider yourself lucky ... here's why.

A Sun Dog is caused by water vapor that freezes into ice crystals. The sunlight is then refracted by the ice crystals, forming bright rings on either side of the visible sun. Sun dogs usually happen when the temperature is well below zero, and the wind is stronger than 15 miles an hour. The rings are supposed to resemble the tails of dogs - hence the name. I call them frostbite beek-ons. Be one with the chicken, and stay inside!

The last few days have been brutal. I had minor frostbite twice. Something about temperatures that can kill you that is just not very appetizing!

Speedcat Hollydale said...

Lilly, I have seen sun dogs many times, but never this vibrant. They actually made the news and everyone was talking about them on Monday. The photos cannot reall do justice to what I saw in person. Very surreal.

That's what those things are! How cool. But yeah, I don't think I want to be seeing any of those around here. It gets cold enough. But at least I know what everyone is talking about when they mention these now. Thanks! Cool pics too!

I also wanted to say that I loved your song choice in the previous post. It brings back lots of good memories. I didn't want to comment over there though since I don't belong to whatever that linky business is and didn't want to screw anyone up. :)

Using a Smartphone modem, the snow comes up after everything else loads...but it's there in Firefox definately.

Those glasses, lol. Fog, ice over, in and out of the cold into warmth and back. :)

Speedy, I hear you on the cold. I am already ready for spring! HA HA!! It is 17 degrees here right now, and they are predicting an ice storm for us later tonight--fun, fun, fun.

*Singing, "the weather outside is frightful."*

Olga--52 degrees!!!! Honey, that's a heat wave! HA HA! I would dance a jig if it was that warm here in December. Sort of like the old man Speedcat jig dance in the kitchen. heeeeeee! :D

So sorry to hear about the frost bite Speedy--that can be nasty stuff. Sure hope you are staying warmer now. You need to get some of those handwarmer thingys to put inside of your gloves and shoes and such. Wear more layers, more layers, more layers----till you can't even move, like the kid in Christmas Story movie--ha ha ha!

About 20 years or so ago, I worked on a bookmobile. Basically, it was sort of like a truck full of books. It was kind of old (even for then) and the heater on it didn't work very well. I HATED being on that in the winter because it just felt like a refrigerator on wheels. My toes and fingers were ALWAYS numb. Hated it!

If I had any sunshine here to warm you up, I'd send it to you. :)

And by the way, yes, I see snow falling on your blog and I'm telling you if you don't turn it off soon, you're going to have to do a lot of shoveling!! Bloggers are going to come linking in here and they are going to get stuck in all this snow that is piling up. Word will get out in the blogosphere--"Better wear your boots and snowpants and put on your snow tires if you go to Speedcat Hollydale Page or you will get stuck there for sure in all that snow." It'll be on the evening news---"There's a 30 Blogger pileup again at Hollydale!" HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! :D

Just for you, Speedy-- to warm you up!
